Most Muslim men probably know that they should grow their beards. Some of them make excuses saying that beards are itchy of some such other nonsense. Others like to say that it’s not an obligation. Most probably know the religious reasons and rewards for growing your beard but here are the top ten non-religious reasons to help these guys make the switch from the smooth feminine look to man-fur.

This isn’t new but, I recently remembered a dream that Shaykh Muhammad al Shareef related to a group of us during an al-Maghrib class. In his dream he was in a supermarket when the speakers began to play the song The John Walker Blues by Steve Earle, which is about John Walker Lindh the so-called “American Taliban.”

When Steve Earle begins to recite the shahada everyone in the supermarket also began to make the shahada and embrace Islam. Shaykh Muhammad felt that it was a good omen and I agree.

It is indeed a very inspiration dream. I am posting the lyrics to the song below and also a video of a cover of the John Walker Blues for those who don’t mind the music. (Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the original Steve Earle song on YouTube). I listened to it and it well written, it’s hard to believe that a non-Muslim wrote a song like this but subhanallah, here it is.

The John Walker Blues by Steve Earle

I’m just an American boy raised on MTV
And I’ve seen all those kids in the soda pop ads
But none of ‘em looked like me
So I started lookin’ around for a light out of the dim
And the first thing I heard that made sense was the word
Of Mohammed, peace be upon him

chorus:
A shadu la ilaha illa Allah
There is no God but God

If my daddy could see me now, chains around my feet
He don’t understand that sometimes a man
Has got to fight for what he believes
And I believe God is great, all praise due to him
And if I should die, I’ll rise up to the sky
Just like Jesus, peace be upon him

chorus

We came to fight the Jihad and our hearts were pure and strong
As death filled the air, we all offered up prayers
And prepared for our martyrdom
But Allah had some other plan, some secret not revealed
Now they’re draggin’ me back with my head in a sack
To the land of the infidel

A shadu la ilaha illa Allah
A shadu la ilaha illa Allah
